THE SOULFUL LIFE PROJECT 001: CAITLIN DAVIS

This is the first post of a new series I'm launching called The Soulful Life Project. I really wanted there to be a community section of the blog because that's one of the things I love most about CrossFit and from working at lululemon. I love meeting new people and learning about their story. I have met SO many awesome people along the way that I wanted to create a space to share them.

The Soulful Life Project will be a series of guest posts from different people in the community. Each will be sharing a little bit about their story & why they do what they do. These posts will be featured the last week of every month.


First up is one of my dear friends, Caitlin Davis. Caitlin and I met through CrossFit (surprise, surprise) and we quickly bonded over our hate for snatching and love for nutrition. Originally from Knoxville, Tennessee, Caitlin currently lives in Memphis with her dog, Blitz. She is on her way to completing her degree to become a Registered Dietician with a specialty in Sports Nutrition. Learn how CrossFit helped her get a fresh start and how it’s continued to push her to be her best self.


WHY I DO CROSSFIT

It's September, 2014:

I'm 26 years old and in a new city. I am here for a fresh start. The years prior had been devoted to whimsical adventures, lots of mistake making, and in a way, avoiding the realities of adulthood. Then life took me to Memphis, Tennessee. A new place, one where I would begin to thrive.

Many deliberate decisions were made at the beginning of my new life venture in Memphis. Let's grow up, Cait. Time to enter the world as an adult. No more putting off responsibilities. No more partying. No more reckless behavior or neglecting my health. It was time to take some major action in positive directions.

I had abandoned the once athletic, active version of myself during my college days, but became interested in getting back in shape and wasn't quite sure how to do that. I started running here and there, but found it less than exciting and yearned for something more intense, interesting, and fun.

A close friend suggested I go with her one Saturday to a free Crossfit class down the road. I didn't know much about it at the time, but it was free and she assured me I'd have a great workout. I went, got my butt kicked like it hadn't been in years, maybe ever! I signed up for a Fundamentals course that same day.

Since beginning my Crossfit journey, my life has changed dramatically. It was something I had been searching for most of my life and didn't even know.

IT HAS PROVIDED ME WITH KNOWLEDGE: how to be a smart athlete and not get injured, how to eat to best fuel my body for performance and recovery, how to leave my ego at the door and seek help when I need it, how to rely on a community of peers to get me through really tough stuff.

IT HAS PROVIDED ME WITH FRIENDS: most of my closest friends to date I met at my Crossfit gym. Friends who push me, inspire me, nurture me, and support me. They hold me accountable and help me continue to grow.

IT HAS PROVIDED ME WITH SELF-CONFIDENCE: I see concrete evidence regularly that I am strong, capable, and hard-working. Not much in life has been more effective in boosting my self esteem.

The active, vivacious me has been fully reawakened and for that, I am SO grateful. I get to try new things regularly. I get to be humbled completely and then lifted back up again. I get to be surrounded by people who truly inspire me, people I would have never met without this common bond we share. I get to learn about myself, how my mind works, and how important it is to carry a positive attitude into everything I do. Crossfit is an element of my life that reinforces all the necessary parts of remaining healthy: eating right, sleeping right, doing physical work with my body. I am confident that trying that free Saturday Crossfit class was one of the best decisions I've made so far and hope this journey can continue for many years to come.
